DETAILS: After a hotel or cruise ship pick up, the private tour commences with a beautiful scenic coastal/lake side ride from Athens to Corinth. We'll visit the engineering marvel, the Corinth Canal, which took 2,000 years to complete and connects the Aegean and Ionian Seas. The tour subsequently moves on to ancient Corinth where St Paul lived and preached for two years. Included is a visit to the Agora and the 6th century Temple of Apollo, one of the most outstanding monuments of the pre-Roman period.
Following this, the tour proceeds on to the ancient Port of Cehries, the disembarking point of St Paul.
The excursion will also include the sanctuary of Goddess Hera, the Heraion of Perachora. Extremely popular for cult activity from approx. the 9th century BC to 136 BC. Here you'll find the unusual construction of the Temple of Hera, an L-shaped Stoa (shopping area), and a large cistern and dining rooms.
After all this history, the tour becomes a bit lighter with a visit to the famous salt water Vouliagmeni Lake. The tour allows time to enjoy the afternoon with a swim and/or dine at one of the many cafes and tavernas surrounding the lake. Watching the local fishermen doing their daily business as they have for thousands of years is also a treat.
FYI: The lake itself was chosen, due to it's rocky geography, for the 1962 movie 'The 300 Spartans' starring Richard Egan and Sir Ralph Richardson. The music was by the famous Greek composer, Manos Hadjidakis and the King of Greece loaned 5,000 men from the Royal Hellenic Army to act as the Spartan warriors.
