History buffs, on this shore excursion you'll visit the Marathon tomb outside the town of Marathon. This is the final resting place of the 192 soldiers that died in the Battle of Marathon.  You will see a huge mound that was a custom of the Greeks to make after they had cremated the hero soldiers. Homer told of this same method in his book, the Iliad.

Then to the site where the marathon race originated. Hear fascinating stories of the soldier who ran 26 miles from Marathon to Athens to announce the defeat of the Persians. The start of the 26 mile run as a competitive race was in 1896 Olympics. The area is steeped with pride and history.
