The 25 meter tall Ottoman Clock Tower has become the “symbol of Izmir”, located in the heart of town, Konak Square. It was built in 1901 as a 25th anniversary honor of the enthronement of the Ottoman Sultan Abduhamit II. An interesting fact about this clock mechanism, which was a gift from the German Kaiser Wilhelm II, is that it has never stopped running.

The beloved Ataturk, the national hero given the credit for bringing Turkey into the present, has a monument in the center of Republic Square and  stands as a  tribute to his accomplishments. This monument was erected in l933 and commemorates the liberation of the city by Turkish Forces.
