Visit on your private guided shore excursion-tour from Kusadasi. Popular historical opinion is that Jesus gave the honor of watching over his Mother, Mary, to St. John, his favorite Apostle. In her later years, John brought her to the area of Seljuk (Ephesus) where she spent her last years.

Now the tranquil retreat in honor of the Mother (Virgin) Mary has become a Vatican appointed pilgrimage. Since then, it has become a place that nearly one million people per year visit. Christians come, but so do Muslims, considering that the Mother of Jesus is the most frequently mentioned woman in the Koran. Pope Benedict XVI celebrated Mass at the House of the Virgin Mary in Ephesus on Nov. 29th, 2006 following in the tradition of two other Popes from prior times.

If you like this as an itinerary choice you might like these other popular favorites in the Kusadasi area: the St. John’s Basilica, Ephesus, and the Ephesus museum.
