Ancient Thira

An important period in the history of Santorini is linked with this hilltop city of Ancient Thira. The excavation there has revealed ruins of the town which bore evidence of settlement 3,000 years ago, as early as the 9th century BCE. Plus, there are many articles ffrom Egypt now seen in the Ancient Museum. This is due to the royal ruling family, the Ptolemy’s lived here once.

It is a naturally fortified spot and thus an ideal place for the Spartan colonists to create their city. They built two roads, one to Kamari, where they had their port, and the other to Perissa.

This tour is for 18 person vehicles only, as the road up the mountain is small and winding.
